Local wind speed forecasting based on WRF-HDWind coupling

Wind speed forecasts obtained by Numerical Weather Prediction models are limited for fine interpretation in heterogeneous terrain, which different roughnesses and orographies occur. This limitation is derived from the use of low-resolution grid-box averaged data. In this paper a dynamical downscaling method presented to increase local accuracy wind forecasts. The proposed divides forecasting into two steps. first one, mesoscale model WRF ( Research Forecasting ) used getting at specific points study domain. On second stage, these values feeding HDWind microscale model. that provides both high-resolution field covers entire domain direction very located points. As an example method, we calculate urban-interface area Badajoz, South-West Spanish city near Portugal border. results compared with read weathervane tower State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) order prove improves • A accurate estimation meets characteristics terrain proposed. procedure based on dynamic coupling joint operation allows improve provided supposes slight simulation time. improvement can be useful near-surface winds.
